Defensive 4WD Training


  • Course Description

    This course is designed to give participants the skills and knowledge required to: 

    • Identify four-wheel drive specific terms, terminology and techniques
    • Plan for minimal environmental impact
    • Perform pre-departure checks
    • Use four-wheel drive mode
    • Coordinate and recover a vehicle
    • Perform maintenance and minor repairs on four-wheel drive vehicles

    In accordance with all relevant legislation, key policies, procedures and documentation required to operate and maintain a four-wheel drive vehicle including:

    • environmental and land management principles
    • problem solving skills for operation and maintenance of a four wheel drive vehicle
    • handover procedures
    • technical information, including manufacturer manuals related to operation and maintenance of a four wheel drive vehicle
    • operation of vehicles within specifications and limitations
    • faults in vehicles and ancillary equipment
    • driving techniques and handling characteristics of four-wheel drives in different terrain
    • differences between optional four-wheel drive and constant four-wheel drive vehicles and their impacts on vehicle operation and capability
    • tyre management principles
    • hazards associated with vehicle recovery
    • travelling in convoy
    • area restrictions
    • basic four wheel drive maintenance procedures
    • principles and techniques for identifying relevant hazards and emergencies
    • techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others

    Operators must have the appropriate class of driver's licence before taking charge of the vehicle.

    Full face-to-face training and assessment (1 day)

  • Entry Requirements

    An individual undertaking this course with NNZMC PTY LTD T/a Industry Skills Solutions will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry: 

    • Participants must supply their own vehicle and insurance
    • Participants must have the appropriate class of driver's licence before taking charge of the vehicle.
    • Participants must be 16 years and over 
    • Participants must have the physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical skills demonstration; 
    • ID is required 
    • A Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number. This is required prior to enrolments being processed. To obtain a USI number, please go to www.usi.gov.au to register.
    • Participants must wear enclosed shoes/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing 
    • Language, literacy and numeracy requirements - students must be able to read and correctly interpret required documentation relevant to four wheel drive vehicles, speak clearly and unambiguously in English, explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues and understand the risk assessment requirements. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports. Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly calculate total travel distances. 
    • Online study:  Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies. Attendees must have completed their own online pre-course work (if applicable) prior to attending the face-to-face training day. If any applicant has not completed the online pre-course work, they will be unable to attend the session. This may incur further charges or cancellation fees.
  • Assessment

    Individuals undertaking this course with NNZMC PTY LTD T/a Industry Skills Solutions will be expected to complete verbal, written and practical assessment tasks.

  • Outcome

    Upon successful completion of this training course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised unit/s of competency:


    RIIVEH305F - Operate and maintain a four wheel drive vehicle


    Your Statement of Attainment will be issued by NNZMC Pty Ltd - T/a Industry Skills Solutions RTO 45974.
